Segal’s Law
Sometimes, having too many options can lead to more confusion than clarity.
25 years ago, I found myself completely immersed in a piece of music software called Music 2000. It was an incredibly basic piece of music software, with just a few simple tools and a straightforward interface. I remember creating some of my best tracks with that extremly limited piece of kit. Because it was so basic - I made music, not decisions.
Fast forward to today - music production software has evolved into something incredibly complex - endless buttons, sliders and settings. But instead of feeling empowered, I find myself overwhelmed and second guessing every creative musical decision. This is Segal’s Law in action: when we rely on just one tool, we trust it. When we have too many options we often end up drifting in the sea of uncertainty.
So, next time you find yourself stuck in the doldrums, remember that stripping things back may be the best way forward.
